The entire family can participate as there is a job for everyone to do, from taking lap times to cleaning the chassis. It provides an opportunity to do something together as a whole team. Karting appeals to girls and boys, men and women, from ages 5 to 80. There is a place for everyone from local level up to national level competition. Many programs and classes are available, so it is easy to be competitive and feel the thrill right away.
Step 1 - Check It Out
The first step in getting started is to take the family out to a local race. You might want to buy a pit pass, wander around the pits and watch the races from there. This way, you are right where the action is. You will get a good feel for how races are run plus the opportunity to ask questions. Most racers are extremely enthusiastic; very willing to tell you about the sport and help you get started. Information about rules, schedules, classes, engines and recommended karts may be obtained from track officials, racers or at the registration desk. Most tracks have a rule book - try to get one while you are there.
Step 2 - Read Up
There are several excellent books on karting readily available from Romeo Motorsports. These books are The Beginner's Complete Karting Guide, Racing the Yamaha KT100-S, and The 4-Cycle Engine Guide. These are comprehensive books you will find helpful. We also have other technical books and manuals such as the Batavia International Motorsports Park Rule Book. Types of Racing Dirt or speedway racing, done on oval tracks with either a dirt or asphalt surface; left turn only type of competition. Ovals range from small bull rings to large ¼ mile tracks. Dirt track racing is an ever-changing situation that provides an excellent challenge, usually held at night. Asphalt tracks are more constant, can be day or night. Sprint racing takes place on an asphalt road course with right and left hand turns, banked monzas, hairpins and straight-aways. Racing is usually in the daytime. Engines Either a 4 cycle or 2 cycle - 4 cycle is the most popular in this area for the younger drivers. 4 cycle engines are mostly 5HP Briggs & Stratton and 5HP & 6.5HP Honda OHV. 2 cycle engines are primarily foreign made. Yamaha and Parilla are popular as well. Classes are by age, weight and type of engine. Different tracks run different classes. Make sure you know the class set-up before you buy your equipment.
Step 5 - Budget
You will need some basic equipment to get started. New or used, you should be able to stay within this budget. Contact Romeo Motorsports to help you develop a budget that is right for YOU.
Step 6 - Go Shopping
Make a trip to the kart shop, like Romeo Motorsports. The owner and racing technicians will be your source for some of your best information. The shop will set you up with the equipment that is right for the level of racing you are planning. All information on kart set-up, engine tuning, maintenance and driving basics is available at this business. Many of the shops employees build and race karts themselves.
Step 7 - Practice
Now, you're almost ready to go racing! A little "seat time" in a con-competitive environment will be helpful. Many tracks set aside during the week and/or weekend for open practice. This gives you the change to run a lot of laps and get the feel of the kart and the track. Call your local track for practice times. Be sure to practice the basics: starting, stopping and tuning to the engine. Learn to signal by raising your hand in the air to let others know you are exiting the track, slowing down or when you have spun out and are still on the track. If the kart comes to a halt on the track or your engine quits, immediately push it off the track and into a safe position. Step 8 - The Big Day Go to the races. Get there early. Take advantage of the practice time before the race. Ask to start at the back of the pack. Keep your cool. Learn a lot. Celebrate your achievement! HAVE A GREAT TIME!!
